Magazine Analysis - Billboard; Rihanna

Billboard magazine is a chart magazine that doesn't focus on a particular genre, which is similar to Rihanna herself as she is related with R&B and pop, so she is appropriate for the front cover of this magazine. Rihanna also appears to the magazine's target audience as her fan base are interested in chart music and she is a young artist who features within the charts regularly.

Layout; The margin gives the magazine means the audience reads the magazine automatically from the left, noticing the headlines the magazine wants. The colour scheme is mainly primary colours white and red which are simplistic, mature and appealing.

Main Image; Rihanna's pose could be presented the audience as provocative, appealing to the male gaze. This pose may also appeal to the female audience as they will admire Rihanna and aspire to be her. Her neutral top could suggest innocence, but as it is could be seen as revealing due to the length and structure of the top, as skin is shown allowing to see tattoos this could suggest the opposite to innocence, but also could show fierce characteristics. The brightness and boldness of the red hair connotates passion and lust, the same passion which could be felt whilst listening to her music. The red also contrasts against the purple background, as red is a powerful colour our eyes as an audience are instantly drawn to this.

Masthead; Uses the billboard logo. Is seen, on every edition of the billboard magazine there creating a brand identity so it is easily recognisable. The front is informal aiming at it's target audience of teenagers. The colours red and yellow are gender neutral, appearing to both sexes. The word billboard is also the word of a advertising sign, telling us the magazine contents a form of media.

Header; draws attention to the conference. Shows it as a form of media and advertising. The main image of Rihanna overlaps the masthead suggesting the billboard isn't a independent magazine and customers will recognise it even if it is covered.

Feature Headline; 'Rihanna' is written in gradient, above the anchorage of 'my fans don't really know who i am' suggesting it is fading because the Rihanna we think we know, we do not. This could be due to many of Rihanna's re inventions of her image. The heading is spread over the width of the magazine, bigger than the mast head, suggesting Rihanna is a bigger star than the magazine. The use of white against the purple makes it stand out . The white could also portray purity and innocence.

Quote preview; 'Don't know who i am' makes the audience want to read on due to curiosity to find out more about Rihanna, to feel closer to her.

Bar Code; a common convention used on magazines, which allows purchase of the product. But also shows the magazine is official.

Date and Price; A common convention in all magazines. Price is very small conveying that the company doesn't want the price to be to obvious as this would not appeal to the audience.

Cast

I will not have a narrative in my music video however, I will feature characters with one main cast member lip syncing the lyrics of my chosen song. Therefore once I had chosen the song and setting, I began to make decisions regarding cast and filming.
My cast will be female based, although my target audience is both male and female by having an all female cast,  boys will be attracted to the females therefore wanting to watch the music video, and females will aspire to be the attractive females by wanting their style making them watch the music video. Therefore by having an all female cast appeals to both male and female.

As I wanted to create the right atmosphere for my music video, it was crucial for me to choose a cast who would be suitable. For the cast I decided on 5 close friends as I knew they were suitable for the role as they are out going and confident, and therefore wouldn't shy away from the camera. Therefore these characters would appeal to my target audience.

However after filming with all of my chosen cast members I decided that five was too much as I needed a selling point and a brand identity and five cast member looks to confusing as they all come in at different times, but also it was difficult to make sure all five cast members had a role within the music video. Therefore I decided on cutting down the cast, leaving me with three members, however again the three members were still too much as I still wasn't getting the selling point I wanted, after filming in several different locations to try and make a difference to the shots and create the selling point and identity I needed three cast members still didn't fit my intentions for my music video. Therefore I cut numbers again this time just focusing upon one female protagonist which was a lot more successful, as all my time was focused upon her and I was able to get many shots, with a variety of costumes all relating to my target audience.

Mise en scene for my music video

Analysis of digipak Lana Del Rey - Born to Die

The main image on the front cover of the album 'Born to Die' by Lana Del Rey, is Lana herself. She is directly addressing the camera and effectively the audience, which gives off a powerful and stern vibe from the artist herself. Her simple yet extremely effective image gives her a classy look due to the way her hair is styled behind her shoulders, her make up which is not to heavy and her chosen outfit of a classic white blouse. This allows her 'pop' label of genre to be very much questioned as this album perceives a indie artist as there is not very much going on within the mise en scene whereas with a pop artist, their front cover is usually technologically enhanced with a computerised feel to the image and the overall album. However, there is a slight element of hyper reality as her face has clearly been airbrushed as her skin is flawless and reaches the critic of perfection. Additionally, the outline around her hair looks to pristine, especially due to the fact the image was seen to be taken outdoors. The overall image of Lana look hyper reality however this is a similar trate used by a lot of artists when creating albums. Her placid and innocent expression could indicate a contradiction with the album title 'Born to die'. The narrative isn't specifically applicable to this image as the image doesn't necessarily tell a story about the artist, apart from she has a vintage vibe and approach to the music. The theme of a vintage style is continued to the mise en scene of her clothing, hair and make up; as her clothing is classy and classic and her make up is simple with the bright coloured lipstick.

The setting of the front cover album is plain which could suggest the main element would be the artist herself as she wants to stand out from her album cover. Secondly the background and the vintage car which connotates her genre. The boldness of the blue sky allows the text to stand out, the blue shade also compliments the white bold title as the blue enhances the white which makes the title bounce off the album cover. The shade of blue is also featured and is a main colour which is used throughout the album cover, this emphasises the artists songs as the shade blue represents sadness, as the title of the album is 'Born to Die', this suggests the theme of her songs is sadness.

The text is large and spread across the top of the front cover, in bold capital letters allowing it to protrude through the background and creating an impact. The text is seen as informal as it is spaced out and taking up a lot of area space on the album cover which grabs the audiences attention. However the text for the title of the album is much smaller and has been made to fit on the area of Lana, where the background is white allowing it again to stand out, but also reinforcing the use of the three main colours; which are red, blue and white. This could also be to show her national identity and be patriotic to her country, as the American flag is also featured in her music video to 'Born to die' as is the album.

Iconography is present within the mise en scene of the CD, as rose suggest love and passion but can also be seen as blood and death due to the deepness of the red which juxtaposes her album which allows the audience to portray their opinion. The continuous colour of red is also used to represent love and lust which is shown through the lyrics of her songs. On the CD there is no text or any title showing that the plain appearance of the CD may not correspond.

The text is the same font and colour as the text on the front cover, making it iconic to the album and the artist herself. The text is the same proximity of the text on the front cover, again suggesting an informal approach to the appearance of the album and to her attitude to music. Her first song on the song list is the title of the album.

Analysis of digipak Chris Brown - F.A.M.E

The main image is of the artist himself which is placed in the centre of the front album cover, he seems to have straight eye contact with the camera. The direct mode of address shows a sense of confidence, his facial expression is stern which could link to the persona of the artist as having quite a harsh and a masculine side to him. Also by focusing the main image on him focuses on his target audience which will mainly be a female based audience, as the image would be seen to be attractive. The front cover also contains graffiti style of drawing which has references to the street and connotations of an urbanised and underground theme. The artist is seen to be with no other band members or instruments suggesting he is a solo artist.

The typography used is consistent throughout the album, the title 'F.A.M.E' stands out even on the chaotic background and foregrounding images due to the use of capitalised letters and large font which could be used to show his flamboyancy images which makes him as a artist stand out. It also follows the graffiti style and stays consistent throughout. Multiple colours are used however the typography is limited to blue and white, this is kept simple due to the hectic background which is full of images of a variety of colours, therefore the title is much easier on the eye.

The background images on the front cover is very image orientated just like the main image it focuses on the visuals of the artist. This is similar for all hip hop genre albums. The clothing of the artist consists of hats and casual clothing which is also common for this genre of hip hop. The images used are extremely colourful which again attracts the target audience for this genre which tends to be mainly a younger audience aged 13-22, in addition it could refer to the multiple talent of the artist and his artistic nature, in particular his dancing and acting which invites the RnB target audience profile as well as the hip hop genre of his target audience to also be interested in the digipack.

The inside panel CD; Black on white on the background creates a strong contrast making the image and font stand out to the audience, in addition it could denote another persona of the artist, being black and white conventionally having connotations of sophistication and Chris Brown's persona of being stylish and trendy. The long shot allows the audience to see the costume and leant forward, arms back position that he is in is fairly reminiscent to Michael Jackson suggesting this may be an influential idol for the artist as he is also a talented musician and dancer. Consistent graffiti typography is continued however the colours are different in order to contrast with the white background.

Another picture of the artist is used on the back cover of the album in metal mask, which could have connotations of being imprisoned or being hidden behind a mask especially in a contradicting to the album title 'F.A.M.E', we cant see the artists face, which could be linked to his history from becoming famous. This time looking away from the camera in a wide shot, we can see his whole body including his body language and costume which is more formal compared to the front cover again looking quite like Michael Jackson. The back cover seems to contrast in terms of the artists costume and the direct mode of address again showing multiple persona's of the artist and denoting what comes with fame. Pink background makes the artist in black and the song list stand out more.

Black font this time not in graffiti style font contrasts well with the pink background which isn't dull or monochrome, which again shows the visual aspect of the hip hop genre. Side panels show the title of the album and the artists name, consistent to the album's front cover in terms of font and background.

Lyrics - LarsM Ft Tali Kouch Golden Drops

Instrumental

Golden drops it's pure it's fun, golden drops that take away your soul
Breathe in your ambitions and throw them into the unknown
Minimal pain, sends pulses through my veins
Golden drops find there way into your soul you don't want this to be gold

Instrumental

Golden drops they sink into my skin, leave your fears and throw them into the unknown
If your mind is focused on that alone, golden drops find there way into your soul
Freedom

Instrumental

Golden golden drops, leave your sorrows, leave your fears and throw them into the unknown
Golden golden drops, leave your sorrows, leave your fears and throw them into the unknown

My artist LarsM- Background information

After choosing my artist and the song I decided to do some background research into my artist and what inspired them to take the route of creating music. LarsM is a 21 year old up and coming artist. Her passion for music was ignited in 2010 after hearing successful artists such as AVICII and Eric Prydz. After realising how successful these artists started to become, LarsM began to thrive a victorious success like their own. Her music would be seen to fit in the genre house, however some of her songs would be seen to have a slight pop twist. LarsM has only recently in the past four years started to create her own songs however she describes how she has always wanted to be in the music industry.

Above is an image of a site my artist uses to promote themselves as an artist but also their songs. The graph presents her success as an artist which has increased massively in just months, therefore I felt by choosing a successful artist with songs which not only myself enjoys but many other people too, I felt it would enable me to create a music video which would represent the artist well.

Communication With My Music Artist

Below shows an image of an email I sent to my artist asking for permission to use the song they had created.

Monday 12 October 2015

Filming Schedule

I plan on filming my music video over the course of 2-3 weeks, this enables me with plenty of time to gain several successful shots at a professional standard with a variety of camera movements and angles. Also the allows me to visit all my locations and gather all cast members together to gain the group shots needed.

05/11/15-  this date I chose in particular as this was bonfire night, as fireworks are seen as one of my main props/feature throughout my music video shooting on bonfire night is the perfect occasion. Due to having a small social gathering of food and drinks allowed me to shoot successful shots of a variety of different coloured fireworks, whilst having all cast members needed present. I shot this particular scene at around 7pm as I needed the lighting to be dark in order to see all fireworks clearly allowing me to get several successful shots, whilst also creating the lyrical meaning of the song 'Goldendrops'.

10/11/15- This particular day I will visit one of my main locations which will feature throughout my music video, the grande house at Newstead Abbey. Not only will I have access to the house enabling me to gain elegant and sophisticated shots of the grande house, I will also have access to the houses grounds, where I will shoot several shots with the natural environment such as, flowers, trees and waterfalls. I will also film certain points of the journey there as these will act as moving shots from shot to shot creating flow and rhythm.

18/11/15- On this day I plan to shoot one of the cast members in front of an elegant backdrop, with a natural lighting to emphasise the young females natural beauty and emphasie her facial features. The clothing the young girl will br dressed in will be tight low cut tops, as this is a typical convention of the genre house as the females are seen to be the selling point as females aspire to  be her whilst males aspire to be with her. Therefore portraying her in an attractive but sexual way attracts my target audience.

25/11/15- My final scene I will film will be of another social gathering of the young girls preparing for a night out, drinking alcohol and dancing which again are typical conventions of my chosen genre house.

Pitch - Music Video

Song:
The song i have chosen to base my music video is LarsM ft Tali Kouch Golden Drops. This song would be categorized in the genre house.

Mise en scene
Locations;
Grande houses- therefore possible locations such as Chatsworth House, Wollaton Park and Newstead Abbey. I have chosen these possible locations as this provides a variety of open space areas for my mise en scene which widens my location shots. Also these locations will have an environment surrounded by nature such as trees, flowers and bushes which will be appropriate props i will contain within my music video.
House- i will be filming in a house mainly in a bedroom to represent the protagonist and other background characters to be getting ready (wrapping up) for the night ahead.
Field- i will be filming on an open field during the evening as the lighting will be considered to be darker enabling me to have eye view of sparklers and fireworks, using a different field varies my options of location providing some rural areas.
Other street locations- this will be to show the variety of transport routes the protagonist uses to get from location to location.

Props;
Nature- things the environment provide such as bushes, flowers, trees and lakes. Things the protagonist can walk through and around, also pick and take an interest too whilst lip syncing to the lyrics.
Fireworks and sparklers- these props will link well with my song as i will use these to express the golden droplets which is the title of my song. The sparklers will also be used to spell out the artist and the title of the song which will be one of my final shots. These props will be used later in the evening as this makes the sparkler effects and the fireworks more visible.
Golden Glitter- also will be used to be sprinkled around the location of the grande house but also the protagonist will be seen to be throwing the glitter into the atmosphere. Finally this prop will accompany the fireworks and the sparklers to also represent the golden drops (title of the song), which will be seen to be on the faces of the protagonist and the background characters.
Alcohol- this will be used at the social gathering where the fireworks will take place, close up shots will be used to show the alcohol being poured into cups.

Clothing;
Casual Sophisticated clothing- this type of clothing will consist of long coats, heeled boots, turtle neck jumpers. This will fit well with my genre and song as this is the clothing which is seen to be popular and trendy to the present today, which also relates to my genre as it is new and trendy. Also due to the location i will first shoot my music video the clothing will need to be seen to fit in with the location therefore due to the location being home to grande houses casual clothing such as trainers and jeans would be seen to be out of place, but also this type of clothing would be seen to be with the genre indie.
Casual Clothing- this type of clothing will be used for the evening location when the social gathering takes place, this clothing will include jeans, jumpers, jackets, hats, scarfs, gloves and comfy shoes e.g trainers. Due to this event occurring outside and also the time of the day the climate would be seen to be much colder, but also fits in with the the social side of the event.

My Ideas;
My opening scene will be in an open space area outdoors containing a rural area, which is also home to a grande house. The protagonist will be seen to be exploring around the environment which include parks and other nature aspects. The main shots i will be using in the beginning of my video will be mid shots, of the protagonist picking flowers, throwing gold dust, the mid shot will enable the audience to hand gestures as well as facial expressions, but also clear to see the lip syncing. Also mid shots will be used of the background characters to show their facial expressions, but also to express their youth. Long shots will also be used in order to get a clear image of the protagonist's clothing and the background characters too. Action shots will also be a major camera shot to grasp the scenery and the activity taken place by the protagonist and the other characters. Close up shots will be used to show feet walking which will be sped up to express the fast beat of the song. Also of the protagonist spinning lip syncing to the song.

There will then be a shift of location to the protagonists and others in a bedroom getting changed for the next event. Mid and Long shots will mainly be used to show the different clothing the young females are changing in too, as it has to be clear to the audience that it is not a night out they are getting ready for. Therefore mid shots and long shots will be used to make it clear to the audience the type of clothing being used, like, jeans, jumpers and trainers. The gold glitter will also be used to be seen on the faces of the protagonist to represent the golden drops. There will then be a zoom in shot of the girls feet climbing into a car which will be sped up to show they are moving on to the next location.

The next location will finally be in an outdoor area, either a field or a house with an outdoor social event occurring. There will be an action shot of the area to show the live atmosphere which will relate to the song well. There will then be close up of alcohol being poured into a cup, which also relates to the genre of the song has house music is seen to be presented with alcohol. Extreme close ups will be used of the explosion of the fireworks and the sparkles which fall from the fireworks to represent the golden drops. There will also be jump cuts back to the protagonist of the lip syncing of the lyrics which then cuts back to the fireworks. Also an action long shot will be used of the protagonist and others sparkling sparklers, which they will be spelling out the artist and the title of the song.

Target audience;
My target audience would be the younger generation such as young adults and teenagers, this is because the genre of my song is a popular choice for this target audience as the genre is new and trendy.

Record Label

When considering a record label which would represent and produce my media products. I started to research well known and used record labels; having a secured record label in the real world would be a vital step in securing success of the launch of your music, ensuring commercial success. My chosen record label is ministry of sound, the record label is also known as a nightclub in London. Ministry of Sound has a network of international offices in Australia, Germany and the United States. The record label was first established in 1995, with the release of 'The Annual'. The Annual went on to sell 160,000 copies and became a global label with over 50 million dancehall albums. Ministry of sound is an independent label and continues to produce and deliver albums to this very day. In January 2006, the company purchased the record label Hed Kandi from The Guardian Media Group. The logo for Ministry Of Sound gives off a British vibe as the crown at the top represents royalty, but gives the logo a more official government effect.

The way the Logo is presented is very modern, as it is bold and shown as 3D, although the logo is seen to be very basic it is well known globally. The white capitalised text against the black background allows the text to stand out. The logo has been created in several different colour schemes, every album has the same logo but the colour scheme varies in order to create individuality. I will be using this record label to support and produce my product as this label is heavily based around house music, and therefore i feel they would be able to represent and support my product well with the right advertisement.

Treatment

My music video will not so much have a narrative as my genre of music doesn't typically have a narrative, however due to containing some lyrics within my chosen song i will have one member from my chosen cast lip syncing to the lyrics. I will interpret the lyrics within my music video by using fireworks which will represent the 'Golden drops'.

I plan to include several different locations/settings for my music video. The young target audience which is predominantly students, who are interested in music and drinking which is stereotypically what my genre is seen to be presented with. I plan for my music video to feature in a back garden with alcohol shown; which could be possibly seen to be similar to a student's lifestyle, as socialising on a low budget is a major factor when being a student. I also wanted my music video to feature on the grounds of a grand house, to show natural elements, but also rebel against the typical house genre but still keep my target audience interested. This will also link to my target audience as the grand house is seen as educational, whilst my target audience is students this works well. I will also shoot a part of my music video in a bedroom, showing a bunch of girl friends doing the typical girl thing, changing clothes, topping up make up and doing each others hair. As again awares the audience they are moving to a different setting but also links to theme of socialisation.

My music video will appear to my target audience, as their are themes within my music video which the majority of the target audience can relate too. The settings are all locations they are familiar too, which involves them in the video wanting them to watch the video over and over again.

I will include shots which are conventions to the house genre. Shots such as close ups, mid shots, long shots, extreme close ups etc.. The close up of the female cast will show their beauty, making her an icon to females and a sex symbol to the male audience. Therefore even though my music video will not consist of a strong narrative, i will create a brand identity for my genre and the music video i have created, which will allow me to gain a fan base, spreading my product which allows a hopeful success and recognition of my artist and chosen song. The location shots will represent the setting, allowing the audience to be involved within the story being told within the music video. The costume used will also be a key feature within my music video, as i include current trends, which are accessible to the target audience.

My filming will be done in different stages, I will have one day of filming per setting. This will allow myself to and my cast members to prepare for each locations, with props, clothing, make up, clothes etc.

Animatic - Music Video

Above is an animatic for for potential shots, mise en scene and cast members which will feature within my music video. The main concept of ideas within this animatic is to show some typical conventions of the genre house, but my intentions were to shy away from the typical house music video therefore featuring young attractive girls consuming alcohol which is nothing but the normal for house music. But I wanted my music video to look elegant and therefore I want to compromise aspects of a typical house music video for other unique ideas, For example instead of using flashing lights in a night club a typical setting for house, I want to use fireworks as this keeps the video fun but also puts a twist in the video which will still attract my target audience.

Also I want nature to be a setting within my video whilst props are also used from the natural environment such as flowers and trees. I also intend to film at a grand house which will also feature within my video alongside the natural environment. The cast which will feature within my music video will be young attractive females as this will create a selling point as females would want to be them and males would want to be with them.

The video presents my ideas for my music video, i have illustrated the variety of shots and camera movements that my music video will consist of. From this animatic the viewers will understand the concept of my music video, also giving hints to the mise en scene such as settings, props and costume. The editing of my animatic presents a vague picture of what my music video will look like.

Explanation for Song Choice

Searching for an Artist

After being given a task to find an artist, I began to watch several different music channels in order to pick a genre I could relate to and be inspired by in order to fullfil my task successfully. After discussing with my teacher and rejecting several genres, artists and songs we concluded an artist who is seen to be within the house genre would be the best option as, I could create a realistic and low budget music video.

Searching for an artist wasn't a long process as I already knew of websites I could search on, such as www.unsigned.com and www.soundcloud.com. These websites advertise unsigned artists in hope of them being spotted. Specifying the genre also helped to narrow the search. Unsigned features many artists of all different genres, finding an artist and a genre is the easiest process as there is a drop down column, where you can request the genre and a large quantity of artists appear. You then choose which artist you would like to listen to.

After looking on these websites I came across an artist which featured on both of these websites who was an artist in the genre house, I immediately loved the music. The music was catchy and I believe it would have a good and successful place in the music industry. I will present a music video which will present the artist, the genre and the song at a high standard which will be good enough to portray the artist.

Analysis of 'J Cole - Crooked Smile'.

"Crooked Smile" is a song by an American hip hop artist and record producer J Cole, which was released June 4 2013., with the group TLC also featuring in the song. The song won impact track of 2013 BET Hip-Hop awards. The song would fit in the genre R&B/Hip- Hop.

The music video begins with a mid shot of the artist himself sat in what seems to be a police car, which then cuts to a flash back of what we assume to be the the morning before the events of him being arrested with digetic sound, which then jump cuts to another male whom is anonymous and unidentified who is later seen to be a police officer to the audience participating in the same activity, of brushing his teeth which is shown by another mid shot. The video jump cuts back and forth of both males showing their daily morning routines which differs from characters with a variety of camera shots such as long shots, which is shown when J Cole is seen to be mowing his grass which would be seen to be a domestic normal activity, which then cuts to several other mid shots if him carrying on his domestic duties such as preparing a birthday cake and setting up a bbq, which allows the audience to assume he is going to be having some kind of gathering/party, whilst non digetic sound of the song is playing in the background.

The video then cuts to a mid shot of a shot reverse shot of the other male on a dinner table eating breakfast with whom we assume to be his daughter. A jump cut to another mid shot is used of J Cole stuffing what seems to be marijuna in the sole of his shoe, which the cuts to an extreme close up of a police officers uniform and badge which we later learn is the other male, therefore allowing clues to the audience of what the video is about. An establishing shot is then used to show what seems to be the family of J Cole coming to visit him, which then shows a mid shot of his sister jump in his arms, which could suggest the don't see each other on a regular basis which is expressed through their facial expressions. Another mid shot is used to show him greeting his other family members which are shown to be his mother and father. A close up is then used of sparklers which suggests celebration. A dark mid shot is then used of the other male still dressed in his police uniform in a van speaking to others in his environment, also containing digetic sound of walkie talkies which gives hints to the audience.

Another establishing shot is used to confirm the celebration of the young girls birthday as she is sat on a table blowing out candles, whilst digetic sound is used as her family members sing happy birthday to her. A jump cut of a mid shot with the use of digetic sound of the others singing happy birthday continues, the other male is shown still in the dark lighting transporting in a van, speaking to others however we can not hear as a listener what he is saying. The establishing shot is then used again showing the young girl to be blowing her candles out, which then continues showing her family members cutting the cake and passing it round the table, whilst jump cuts are still continuing of the other male.

An establishing shot to an extreme close up shows the house where the celebration is occurring, to a black van pulling up outside of the house, which then uses another establishing long shot of several males in black uniform run up and rade the house. A mid shot is then used of the young girl in bed holding tight to her teddy bear, which then cuts to a long shot of the male played by J Cole being arrested, by the male we have seen throughout the video. There is a long shot of an officer who is also holding a gun when this event is happening. Digetic sound is then used which creates a tense atmosphere which then cuts to a close up of another officer entering the hallway, as the young girl comes out of her room, a mid shot is used of the officer firing down the young girl. Which uses the digetic sound of a gunshot and then cuts to a black screen, which represents death. A flashback is then used of the young girl in a mid shot of her playing with a sparkler, which represents the previous celebrations and events that occurred for her birthday. A mid shot is then used of the police officer who shot the young girl standing at the door way, which then cuts to mid shots of sparklers being set off emphasizing how quick the events have occurred taking a young girls life.

A close up of the male played by j cole is used whilst he is sat in a police car, showing his emotional state. Which then cuts to the male officer in a mid shot showing regret and sadness as a facial expression. A two shot is then used of two girls which have been seen previously in the video the young girl who was seen at the breakfast table and the young girl who was killed by a police officer in a light environment, drawing colorful pictures suggesting they are now in heaven and have become friends. Or it could be seen as the two young girls attended school together and were friends. An establishing shot is then used of  the young girls body being carried out of the house. Which finally cut to a mid shot of the male sat in a police car watching the young girl be carried out.

The artist of this video tributes this video to a young girl whom this happened to in reality, and states her name at the end of the video. This video is therefore an illustration video as the video represents the lyrics.

Analysis of 'When I'm Gone - Eminem'

Released in march 2005, by Shady records on the album 'curtain call: the hits'. The song relates extremely well to Goodwin's theory as the lyrics have meaning to the video, as the lyrics pertain to Eminem's life as a celebrity musician and how it interferes with his family life, and the effects on his daughter. Eminem uses imagery to evoke a feeling sadness of his family falling apart, but also due to his daughter being a narrative voice. The genre of this song would be categorised in the rap genre.

The song is gently introduced by light bell sounds followed by numerous violins which make the listener feel emotionally involved with the lyrics, but also the artist and his struggles, which gains a relationship between the two. Also the lighting throughout the beginning of the video is dim and dull, to represent the meaning behind the lyrics.

Music Analysis Using Goodwins Theory "The Kooks - Naive"

The Kooks "Naive"consists of an indie music sound, with elements of rock. The music video is predominantly narrative based with lip syncing during the narrative by the lead singer of the band (no other members feature in the video). The music video tells a story of a girl that is cheating on her boyfriend but he is afraid to leave her as he believes he is the one to change her ways, meaning he is the one who is naive. The music video conforms of Goodwin's theory in the way that it is iconographic of an indie genre in the way that it is simple and the lead singer is usually present in the narrative.

The music video conforms to Goodwin's theory in the sense that there is a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics. Which is shown in several different cases throughout the videos narrative. For example, when the lyrics say 'pretty face' a young pretty girl is presented to the audience. The young girl is presented to be fare, blonde and pretty which stereotypically represents her as an innocent, when in reality she is seen to be doing 'an ugly thing' as stated in the lyrics, which would be presented to be drugs and alcohol, as these feature within the video. There are also bright light frames which feature in the video, as the girl steps over a person lying on the floor, which is stereotype for 'the night after the party', suggesting it is the day after the party. In contrast to the lighting when the lead singer is walking through the party looking for the girl the lighting is much darker, suggesting a flash back. The contrast of the lighting also demonstrates the different time periods to the audience.

The different camera shots start with the camera tracking the lead singer, as he walks through the party, involving the audience as they know his environment making them feel involved. Goodwin's theory is applied in this music video in the sense that voyeurism is used to create fandom. This is shown through the different camera work such as close ups, allowing the audience to gain a relationship with the lead singer as they can experience his variety of emotion.

Overall the music video conforms to Goodwin's theory in the sense of voyeurism illustrating the lyrics and the videos style.

Music Analysis Using Goodwins Theory- Beyonce 'If I Were A Boy'.

"If I Were A Boy" is a song from an album called "I Am…Sasha Fierce" by an American singer Beyonce. The song is considered to be in the genre pop. This music video is a good representation of Goodwins theory, as the lyrics relate to the video, as it is a woman with a mans role, with the perspective of a mans characteristics.

Analysing "If I Were a Boy" Using Goodwins Theory.
As the lyrics and the name state about being a boy, the music video features a strong male dominant role throughout the video, and a typical view on males, which would be seen from a females perspective, due to the artist being female, also due to the narrative being female. The beginning of the music video shows a mid shot of a male and female, whom are stating the words "Intermarry","Honesty", which we immediately relate to a relationship between the two, which later relate to the lyrics. This opening shot is effective as in the setting the tone for the rest of the music video, and gives clues and references to the overarching narrative behind the inspiration for the events which will follow in the video.

Cutting to another mid shot of the female artist, but in this shot she is seen to be wearing a police uniform, which is stereotypically known to be a male role, the lyrics and the soundtrack of the song starting to kick in. Immediately "if i were a boy" is spoken by the singer, there is a literal connection between what is being sung and what we are seeing on the screen. The music video conforms to Goodwin's points in that the song's lyrics are related to the on screen imagery, and also that the tone of the song is reflected by the mise en scene of the footage we see.

Animatic- Taylor Swift Bad Blood

This animatic is for the music video for Bad Blood by Taylor Swift. The genre of the particular music video is pop, however this music video challenges the stereotypical conventions of the genre pop. The target audience for this music video would be the younger generation from the ages of 15-19. The beat is very up- beat with a fast pace, which is not normally a beat Taylor Swift confronts as she is known for her slow love songs.

Lip-Syncing

In preparation for editing and filming for my own music video, I completed a lip syncing task in order to practice my ability to edit and gain a variety of shots, all on timing with the lip syncing. This allowed me to create a music video which looks like the song was sung by the actor(s).

The song chosen for this task was 'Somebody I Used to Know' by Gotye, with a male and female fitting the roles of the vocalists. The task began a difficult task, as to get the lip syncing on time with the music was a task which seemed impossible. After a few more attempts the male actor (Joe) sang the song aloud, which allowed the timing and lip syncing match, also making the video look more realistic. We then muted the clip whilst editing and added the backing track.

The intentions for this task were to imitate the actual music video, therefore myself and the other actor (Joe) remained still in our shots, in order to get the acting and lip syncing on point. Filming this task was difficult as myself and Joe were not professional actors and we had never done lip syncing before, therefore to get in to the role of the characters seemed to be a more difficult than it should of been due to; laughing and coming into the shots at the wrong time which essentially ruined the lip syncing. However after our first few attempts we quickly picked up the role and gained successful shots allowing us to create the video we did.

I believe we ultimately created a successful, clean and effective produc. This task also allowed me to gain experience skills to edit music videos which would help me in the future whilst creating my own music video, therefore helping me feel prepared to create a successful music video for my chosen genre.

Goodwin's Theory

The 6 points:

Goodwin had presented 6 key points that are present in music videos:

1. A relationship between the images shown and the music heard.

The music of the song, will in some form, have a relationship to the images displayed in the video whether the images will be relevant or contridictory to the music. For example , you may expect to see dull dark and seemingly improvised stage surroundings when listening to heavy metal/rock music as this is a stereotypical view on the genre.

2. The visual content of the video will, in some form link to the lyrics of the song.

This has an effect of making the lyrics and the video relate to one another and therefore allows amplification of the lyrics and the videos content. The relationship between the visual and audio can also strengthen the narrative/message presented in the song.

3. Music Video s generally conform to genre characteristics

Stereotypical views are a major impact on this topic, for example a rap artist will often produce a music video which represents the rap genre- so for this topic the main features would be wealth and objectified women, also popular brands and technology when the video was made and released. In abiding by these characteristics of their music genre, music video creators can establish their target audience and in term allow the same target audience to relate to the music video they are watching and identify the genre of the music, however due to the explicit content some videos have a pre warn message or set a age limit as to when you can view that particular music video.

4. An iconic image will often be present and focused on

The popular boy pop band "One direction" will produce music videos that focus on all five band members as they are all well know and well liked by the majority of their listeners whom are interested in the genre pop. Music videos focus well on respective iconic imagery as this defines their identity of the music video and assist on gaining as much attention and popularity in order to gain as many views as possible.

5. The demands of the record label will demand for close ups of the of the artist and the artist may develop motifs within their work. This is often achieved through 'visual style'.

6. Intertextual references are often present

Music videos often contain intertextual referenced sourced from other music videos or other media such as films. These references allow for the music video to be tapped into the culturally relevant trends/ideas circulating in the viewers mind. In including intertextual references in a music video, a kind of synergy occurs when the viewer thinks about the film that the music video has referred to. Ultimately this boosts the popularity of the music video through relating the audience and appealing the culturally/significant themes present in the respective target audience.

Codes and Conventions Of Music Genres

Rock:

Forged in the 60s onwards, the rock genre has many influences including the rhythm of blues. Music videos that fall under the rock genre often show cases the bands live performance, which is often fast paced as the energetic performance is being recreated. It isn't common for rock music videos to have any kind of background story, however in the modern day rock video this is becoming more common. Within a rock music video you will see each member of the group at least once, however it is more than likely that the lead singer will take up most of the camera time, cutting to the audience at certain points of the video sells the experience of seeing them live from your living room, also this potentially sells the experience that some people may choose to attend the bands next performance.

R&B:

Also known as the rhythm and blues started in the 40s, it emerged when African music became more popular. The videos that fit this genre often showcases the singer as rich by displaying large amounts of money and other expensive props such as jewellery and the most modern technology. These videos are also seen as powerful due to the use of background dancers (which are often seen to be attractive women), make up artists and other stylists are often used to gain as what society would see as perfection. It is common for the main singer(s) to be centre of attention. The topics R&B which are most commonly used are love, lust and relationships.

POP:

Similar to an R&B music video Pop will centre the maim singer(s) to make them look as attractive as possible to appeal to their target audiences, for example Justin Bieber will want to appeal to younger female fans. Pop meaning popular it'll show the artist(s) that most people enjoy, often they are not too complex making them enjoyable and easy to listen too. Justin Bieber is a good example of this as his fan base is widely spread. Pop videos often focus more on the production of the song, rather than the live performance, Pop will often portray a party atmosphere giving a sense of social belonging. The videos are often colourful and a little cheesy.

Hip-Hop

Hip-Hop has originated from places in African and the Caribbean where music like jazz, soul and blues have majorly influenced the genre. Hip-Hop explores the themes of love, relationships, everyday struggles, prejudice, inequality and gang culture. They tend to be set in an urban environment often surrounded by graffiti, tall buildings used at a low angle shot to make the artist(s) look powerful and superior, also a popular setting for many hip hop locations is local neighborhoods showing the possible struggles of everyday life. Dress codes in hip hop videos is stereotypically hoodies, hats and trainers. There is often voyuerim used and music videos tend to use a lot of lip syncing, even if there is a strong narrative and it is not all performance based the lead artist(s) tend to take up most of the camera time. Clubs, alcohol and drugs are also stereotypically found in hip hop music videos.

House

The history of house music is short as it begun in the early 1980s in Chicago latter and became much more popular in the UK in the mid 1980s. The sound of house music is well known for its electronic sound and beat. It is usually played in clubs with the target audience of the age range of 18-25. A stereotypical house music video would illustrate dancing, love, sexuality, flashing ligths and drugs, which all relate back to the club environment. A house music video may also contain a DJ as a typical convention due to the beat of the genre which would be related to a set of decks, also due to the schedule the video would be filmed which would be seen to be at night.

History of music videos

Music videos have a history dating back to the earliest days of sound, early promotional shorts were sometimes set to music and many early Disney films, which were based around the songs.
1940s- Another early form of music videos was were one song films called soundies made in the 1940s for the panoram   visual jukebox. Thousands of soundies were made, mostly of jazz musicians. These were short films of musical selections, usually just a band on a film set bandstand made for playing. These jukeboxes were in restaurants and bars and people paid to watch the clips whilst the music played.

1950s- The very first short musical films in the USA made specifically for television were the Snader Telescriptions more than 1000 short musical presentations were filmed for use as television filler between 1950-54. Music centered films, with performance clips in them became popular in the 1950s also. For example Elvis Presley movies with the music Rock around the clock.

1960-70s- Videos began to be produced for music programmes such as Top of The Pops in Britain Hulloballo in the USA. Promotional clips for groups began to be produced, especially The Beatles in the 1960s and other groups in the 1970s.
1980s- In 1981, the US video channel MTV was launched, beginning an era of 24 hour a day music on television. The first ever song to play on MTV was, The Buggles 'Music Killed the Radio Star'. many of the earliest MTV videos came from Great Britain. The effect of MTV and music videos can bee seen in the British band Duran Duran. This band had great visual appearance and appeal, and made interesting music videos but was not receiving radio airplay's of 1981. Showing of the bands videos on MTV made it immediately popular.  This is a short film of the history of music videos, a music video is a short film integrating a song or imagery, produced mainly for promotional purposes.

Present day- Music videos are central to to marketing popular music. MTV continues to be dominant and now reaches over 320 million TV sets in 90 countries and over five continents. Downloading of videos off the internet is now much more common and this is seen as a threat to to the dominance of the MTV.
